Cooking Up Great Eats

You might be surprised to learn that you can make your own food at home. It is often referred to as "cooking". Not the kind of cooking that starts with the opening of a frozen package and ends with the microwave. And not the kind of cooking that involves calling the local delivery service. Preparing a meal from scratch can be one of the most gratifying experiences of the day. Taking the ingredients of your choosing, any cuisine can be cooked up in your kitchen and served with a bit of style and panache. The benefits of making a meal at home are numerous and I won't bore you with a list. Just imagine piping hot, aromatic, and tasty treats emerging from that room with a sink , refrigerator, and that big thingy that gets hot when you turn some knobs.

The recipes featured on this page are culled from Anita's own classic recipe archive. Original recipes dating as far back as 1943 will be posted in their original format. Newspapers, magazine articles. product packaging, and indexed notecars are all part of the archive. Not only are these materials an interesting history of American cuisine, they can also serve as a cultural record of our shared past.

So whether you are ready to cook or just like to imagine what life and cooking were like in another decade, just Dive In!

If you thought that the Great Clinton/Bush cookie debate was something of the recent past, think again. Long before Hillary and Barbara squared off over an oven and the pages of a women's magazine, the Women's Republican Club of Denver tested Mamie Eisenhower's Sugar Cookies against the Walunut Clusters by Pat Nixon. Both recipes are wonderful and easy to prepare. In the interest of political harmony, I won't state which one I preferred. Suffice it to say, that judging was more than half the fun.
